Thames Valley Fly Dressers

A Branch of the Fly Dressers' Guild

Salmon fly tying group

For those who have shown an interest in tying Salmon flies – so you can ask questions in advance, gather materials and maybe even have a try tying these two patterns.

The Salmon Fly Tying programme is:

Thu 29 Feb – Tie the Red Frances on a copper tube – a great fish catcher throughout the year, especially in the autumn.

Thu 7 Mar – Tie the Gold Body Willie Gunn on copper or plastic tube – a classic spring fly.

Thu 28 Mar – tbc – probably a ‘wee double’ for the summer such as the Crathie or Gledswood

Thu 2 May – tbc – probably a tiny tube fly for the summer.

Then we will continue in the Autumn….

Re the Red Frances, Simon has kindly offered:

I'll bring along some premade eyes for all to use - and the ingredients (so I can show how I make them).

I make the eyes out of mono and small black plastic craft beads. I have a pot of those beads - and will share some around (they come in a pot which contains more than anyone could ever use)

Here's a link to the beads for reference:

Tight lines to anyone fishing,

PS - I’ve lost/mislaid my A5 sized notebook / attendance record for the branch – if anyone is at the Cherry Tree – please ask if I left it there on the 1st Feb.

PPS - Peter H and I have also enough Red, Black & Yellow wool to knit several jerseys – so don’t worry if you don’t have any – or indeed any other material – I can supply.
